Introduction

This is an introduction into Basic Digital Photography. It covers the main aspects of digital photography, giving a broad overview and a good foundation for you to further develop into a professional photographer. 

This course is inclusive of, but not limited to; the camera and its functions, what is the purpose of the lens, the impact lighting has on your picture, and how you can compose a picture based on the subject and environment. 

Participants should have a Point and Shoot or Digital Single Lens Reflex – (DSLR) camera to ensure that they are in position to capture all the learnings that is being provided

At the end of the course, all participants are expected to have a good understanding of the use of a Digital SLR Camera, and be able to capture images that are of an acceptable standard.

Motivation

Chinese proverb, “One picture is worth ten thousand words” or as in some cases – it can stir thousands of memories and/or feelings for the individual both as the artists/ or the viewer, photographer or audience. 

Photography isn’t the only way to capture the world, but it certainly is one of the most effective. A photograph records as a frozen moment in our time with its emotions and energy as in its actuality. Today, photography underlines the essence of the events of our times and life. Photographs have visual power and its impact, changes the way we appreciate and value the times and occasions of our lives.  One can look no further than the nearest social media feed, news station or magazine article, to see it influences as a progressive social influencer / actor.   

Photography basics is fundamental to any aspiring photographer and requires understanding of the core camera operations as an artistic and communication tool. As an artistic field of studies  one really never and truly completes their “learning” and also they can improve by building on these fundamentals  through practice, mistakes and open to learning from others more experienced in the profession.   

Objectives 

This is an introduction into Basic Digital Photography and is designed to develop the participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to enable them to undertake the main aspects of digital photography. It also gives a broad overview and a good foundation understanding for you to further develop into a professional photographer.

Participants will be exposed to both theory and practical techniques, but not limited too; the camera and its functions, what is the purpose of the lens, the impact lighting has on your picture, and how you can compose a picture based on the subject and environment. The training offered, can also stimulate opportunities for unemployed participants to become employable; pursue higher training qualification; encourage entrepreneurial development and the use of best practices for aspiring tradesmen. 

At the end of this course, students should be able to: 

• Understand photography from film to digital as how it relates to creative arts, history, media and culture in both a historical and contemporary context.

• Understand the basic vocabulary about photography and cameras and incorporate its understanding when any photographic image is created.

• Find creative ways to solve aesthetic and conceptual problems using a variety of photographic tools and strategies.

• Create photographic work that is personally and /or economically significant and fulfilling.

• Manage challenges and opportunities of working in a photographic environment.

• Establishing a supportive network that provide learning and employment
  

Entry Requirements  

Individuals interested in participating must be fifteen (15) years and over and possess:

1. Two (2) valid forms of picture Identification (Identification Card / Passport / Driver’s Permit),

2. A digital device and internet access for virtual learning,

3. Participants should have a camera (Point and Shoot or Digital SLRs).

• Module 1:   Orientation – Camera – History, Use, Tools and Equipment
• Module 2:   Exposure Control  – Shutter Techniques; Standardized and Creative modes, The impact of different types of exposures – Exposure Control Aperture versus Shutter Speed 
• Module 3:   Lenses – Different types and core functions of lenses;  Focal length
• Module 4:   Review and Q & A; Class discussions/review of pictures submitted by students with a focus on key previous weeks’ learning.
• Module 5:   Composition – Key Elements for Composing a picture: Background; Rule of Thirds; Framing and Leading Lines.
• Module 6:   Lighting – Different types of lighting “Natural vs Artificial; types and purpose of artificial lighting; Soft Boxes 
• Module 7:   Review and Q & A; Class discussions/review of pictures submitted by students with a focus on key previous weeks’ learning.
• Module 8:   Software for Photographers  Examine sample of the different types of software available  – Basic Adobe –  LightRoom actions (Software) 
• Module 9:   FINAL ASSESSMENT ASSIGNMENT – Live Trainees Location

N.B. Each Module consists of two (2) classes/ four (4) hours

Course Cost

Tuition is free of charge, but trainees are required to provide their own training materials and equipment.

Assessment Structure  

A model of continuous in-course assessment coupled with a final assessment project is proposed for this course. Trainees will be assessed at different intervals over the training period as continuous assessment is focused to reduce anxiety with respect to the finality of testing. This assessment method, therefore, enhances learning since trainees will be able to remediate weaknesses before each module ends.
