Introduction 

Soap and Candle Making is an art form and has become decorative works of art that come in an infinite variety of shapes, sizes, colours & fragrances. They are generally used to create a peaceful, romantic ambience and are treasured for their relaxing effect. Soap and Candles have recently become a big part of home decor and this has encouraged the development of new techniques and materials.

Participants will learn the art of candle and soap making, from information on basic ingredients to custom creations.

Motivation   

This course is designed to develop the participants with the knowledge and skills to equip them with the tools necessary enabling them to develop marketable skills, become employable, encourage entrepreneurial development and the use of best practices. 

Participants will be exposed to both the theory and practical techniques as well as different types of materials/resources and equipment used in Soap/Candle Making.   

Objectives 

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the basic knowledge, skills and techniques required to build a home-based business. 

 At the end of this course, students should be able to: 

  • Make a variety of soaps using different types of soap bases
  • Demonstrate and utilise the Melt and Pour Methods
  • Learn techniques in Melting, Moulding and Mixing Colours
  • Make a variety of candles 
  • Learn how to package, cost and label products

Entry Requirements  

Individuals interested in participating must be fifteen (15) years and over and possess:

  1. Two (2) valid forms of picture Identification (Identification Card / Passport )
  2. Proof of Residence (Non – National) .
  3. A digital device and internet access for virtual learning.

  • Module 4:  Soap: Embedding and Layering Techniques / Natural Melt and Pour Technique
  • Module 5: Candle Making: Introduction to Paraffin Wax/Making a Pillar Candle and Paraffin Chunky Candle /Faded edge Candle Paraffin
  • Module 6:  Introduction to Aromatherapy: the Making and Structure of a Candle /using the mottling and tilting methods -Making a Palm Wax Candle /Whipped Wax Candle Making/TroubleShooting and Multi Wicking
  • Module 7:  Introduction to Designer Candle Making: Troubleshooting and Multi Wicking -Troubleshooting and true vs. castile
  • Module 8:  Small Entrepreneur Development-  Management of a Small Business
  • Module 9:  Making a Gel Wax Candle & Aquarium Candle
    • Final Evaluation/Assessment Assignment 
  • Module 10: Final Evaluation/Assessment – Presentation of Portfolio/Videos

N.B. each Module comprises of two (2) teaching sessions /or four (4) hrs

Course Cost

Tuition is free of charge, but trainees are required to provide their own training materials and equipment.

Assessment Structure  

A model of continuous in-course assessment coupled with a final assessment project is proposed for this course. Trainees will be assessed at different intervals over the training period as continuous assessment is focused to reduce anxiety with respect to the finality of testing. This assessment method, therefore, enhances learning since trainees will be able to remediate weaknesses before each module ends.
