Introduction 

Ornamental Landscaping refers to any activity that modifies the visible features of an area of land. These include living elements such as flora or fauna, or what is commonly called gardening, as well as, the art and craft of growing plants with a goal of creating beauty within the landscape. An ornamental landscape may also have non-living additions such as a water feature, garden statues and other art. Ornamental landscapes can incorporate anything that helps to serve the purpose of creating a decorative, visually pleasing setting.

Justification 

This course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to develop marketable skills, become employable, and encourage entrepreneurial development.

Participants will be exposed to the landscaping methods, types of plants, tools, pest and disease control.

Objectives

Participants will understand the difference between landscaping and lawn maintenance with an introduction to basic techniques, tools, and safety practices. The ability to assess land space, plants /ornamentals, weeds, and soil will be developed through theoretical sessions and practical assignments.  Landscape designs which impact property value and maintenance will be key topics covered. 

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Know the methods of landscaping
  • The requisite tools needed
  • Identify types of plant/ornamental 
  • Establish garden beds and a lawn.
  • Establish and maintain a compost heap.
  • Produce a landscape design and best practice of land space assessment (size & natural elements) 
  • Understand the importance of pests and disease control
  • Apply techniques in layering, cutting, seedling propagation and soil types and mixtures, Produce plants using different propagation techniques
  • Design of landscaping features and Estimate cost to create a landscape feature for domestic settings

Entry Requirements 

Individuals interested in participating must be fifteen (15) years and over and possess:

  1. Two (2) valid forms of picture Identification (Identification Card/Passport).
  2. Proof of residence (non-nationals)
  3. A digital device and internet access for virtual learning.

  • Module 2:  Landscape Planning and Design-Development of Site plan / Plant Identification and Choosing  plants for the landscape
  • Module 3:  Plant propagation techniques/ Caring for newly propagated plants
  • Module 4:   Requirements for Plant Growth / Plant Nutrition and Composting
  • Module 5:  Soil Management / Establishing Garden beds and Lawns
  • Module 6:  Lawn and Garden Maintenance, Pruning, Pest and Disease Management, Pesticides: use and safety
  • Module 7:  Creating Garden Highlights and  Accent -Water Features (Fountains and Ponds) 
  • Module 8:  Final Evaluation/Assessment Assignment/Protocol
  • Module 9:   Small Entrepreneur Development- Managing  of a Small Business
  • Module 10:   Final Evaluation/Assessment – Presentation of Portfolio/Videos

 N.B. Each Module consists of two (2) classes/ four (4) hours

 Course Cost

Tuition is free of charge, but trainees are required to provide their own training materials and equipment.

Assessment Structure  

A model of periodical in-course assessment coupled with a final assessment project is proposed for this course. Trainees will be assessed at different intervals over the training period as this helps reduce anxiety with respect to the finality of testing. This assessment method, therefore, enhances learning since trainees will be able to remediate weaknesses before each module ends.
