Wood Burning WB1 – Monday & Thursday, 4:00pm – 6:00pm

Introduction

Woodburning or pokerwork is known as pyrography or pyrogravure and  describes  the freehand art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker.  Participants will learn the art of woodburning and become acquainted with some simple tools and techniques to make souvenirs, portraits and tokens.

Motivation 

This course is designed to give participants the  knowledge and skills required to understand and safely practice the creative art of woodburning either as a hobbyist  or a craftsman. Participants will be provided with marketable skills so as to become employable as an artisan, through the sharing of best skills and the use of best practices coupled with entrepreneurial development knowledge. 

Objectives 

The aim of this course is to promote self-development. whilst  providing participants with the basic knowledge, skills and techniques required to become skilled in woodburning on a personal and /or professional level as creative artisans. 

At the end of this course, participants should be able to: 

  • Identify and use the various tools and equipment used in woodworking.
  • Identify and characterize the various materials, shapes and sizes.
  • Learn simple and creative woodburning/ pyrography techniques.
  • Understand the design essentials and safely create unique and artistic pieces of craft. 
  •  Effectively develop pricing, marketing, branding and presentation strategies of  a final product.

Entry Requirements  

Individuals interested in participating must be fifteen (15) years and over and possess:

  1. Two (2) valid forms of picture Identification (Identification Card / Passport).
  2. Proof of Residency (Non- Nationals) 
  3. A digital device and internet access for virtual learning.
  4. A heavy duty soldering iron

N.B. Each Module comprises of two (2) classes/ four (4) hours

Course Cost

Tuition is free of charge, but trainees are required to provide their own training materials and equipment.

Assessment Structure  

A model of continuous in-course assessment coupled with a final assessment project is proposed for this course. Trainees will be assessed at different intervals over the training period as continuous assessment is focused to reduce anxiety with respect to the finality of testing. This assessment method, therefore, enhances learning since trainees will be able to remediate weaknesses before each module ends.
